Roulette Terms and Phrases
American Wheel A roulette wheel having a total of 38 numbers (0, 00 and numbers 1-36).
Bet on the Layout A wager placed anywhere on the numbers portion of the table.
Black A bet on all of the black numbers. Pays 1 to 1.
Block Betting The set of numbers on one section of the wheel bet as a group in certain roulette strategies.
Carr’ French term meaning a Corner Bet.
Cheval French term meaning a Split Bet.
Colonne French term meaning a Column Bet.
Column Bet A bet on one of the three available columns of numbers. Pays 2 to 1.
Corner Bet One bet on four-numbers. Pays 8 to 1.
Coup One roll; one decision. Winning bet.
Double Zero A bet on the 00 number (coloured green) of the wheel. Pays 35 to 1.
Dozen Bet A bet on one of the three available groups of 12 numbers; 1 through 12, 13 through 24, or 25 through 36. Pays 2 to 1.
En plein French term meaning a Straight Up Bet.
En prison French phrase literally meaning "in prison." A rule applied to even-money wagers only. When the outcome is zero, some online casinos will allow the player to either take back half his/her bet or leave it (in prison) for a subsequent spin. In the second case, if in the next spin the outcome is again zero, then the entire wager is lost.
European Wheel A roulette wheel having 37 slots numbered 1-36 plus a single zero.
Even Bet A bet on all of the even numbers. Pays 1 to 1.
Five Number Bet Common among American double-zero roulette wheels. It's a bet covering 0, 00, 1, 2, and 3.
French Wheel A wheel having only one zero. Generally found in European casinos.
Green Numbers The zero and double zero.
High or Low A bet on 18 numbers; low (1 to 18) or high (19 through 36). Pays 1 to 1.
House Percentage The advantage the casino has over the player.
Inside Bet Any bet made on numbers directly inside the layout. Odds on winning inside bets range from 5 to 1 up to 35 to 1.
La partage A roulette rule akin to the En prison rule, only in this scenario the player loses half their bet and doesn't enjoy the option of leaving their bet "En prison" for a later spin. This refers to the 'outside' even-money wagers Red/Black, High/Low, Odd/Even & applies when the result is zero.
Line Bet A bet on any six adjoining numbers. Pays 5 to 1.
Neighbors The numbers immediately to the left and right of the winning number.
Odd A bet on all of the odd numbers. Pays 1 to 1.
Orphans Commonly heard in European casinos. Refers to a bet on 3 specific numbers 6, 34 & 17 that are neighbors on the wheel, though far apart on the layout.
Orphelins Commonly heard in European casinos. It's a bet on a specific group of numbers on a section of the roulette wheel which are neighbors on the wheel, though apart on the layout.
Outside Bet The betting area on the roulette table bordering the numbers layout. This includes columns, dozens, black-red, odd-even, 1-18, 19-36. Pays 1 to 1.
Parlay or Press To leave your winnings from the previous bet on top of your current bet.
Payout (Pay Out) The amount of money won and paid by the casino to the winning player.
Red A bet on all the red numbers. Pays 1 to 1.
Run A series of like results, such as four red or five odd.
Single number A straight-up bet. Pays 35 to 1.
Six line Bet A six-number bet. Pays 5 to 1.
Sixainne French for 6 line bet.
Slots The sections of the wheel which hold the numbers.
Special Line Bet A bet on the first five numbers; 00, 0, 1, 2 and 3. Pays 6 to 1.
Split Bet A bet on any two adjoining numbers.
Square or Quarter Bet A bet on a square of four numbers. Pays 8 to 1.
Straight Bet A bet on a single number. Pays 35 to 1.
Street Bet A bet on any three numbers in a line. Pays 11 to 1.
Tiers du cylindre French expression commonly heard in European casinos. It is a bet on a particular group of numbers on a section of the roulette wheel which are paired neighbors on the layout.
Toke A gratuity or tip for the dealer.
Transversale French term meaning a Street bet.
Trio Bet A combination wager on 3 numbers at the same time. (Inside bet)
Voisins du Zero French term common in European casinos. It is a wager on a particular group of numbers on a section of the roulette wheel neighboring the zero.
Wheel Checks The special unmarked chips that are used specifically on roulette tables.
Zero A bet on the 0 number (coloured green) on the wheel. Pays 35 to 1.
